Not only would this change give Rand a whole new Wheel of Time arc, but it would fundamentally change the entire story in ways that would be unwelcomed by many.īased on comments previously made by Wheel of Time showrunner Rafe Judkins, most of the changes that the show will offer will relate to maturing the Wheel of Time characters and the challenges of fitting this massive saga into the format of a TV show. After all, most of the stories in the 14-book Wheel of Time series are built around the choices that Rand made as the Dragon Reborn, and the roles that the people in his life played in his destiny. Revealing the Dragon Reborn to someone other than Rand al’Thor would arguably be a bit too significant of a change, and would risk alienating millions of fans of Jordan’s books. While that change is at least a possibility for the series, the chances of it actually happening are rather low. Partially because of the change that was already made to the legend, in addition to the show’s decision to focus less on Rand, some wonder if Wheel of Time might make the Dragon Reborn someone other than him, such as Egwene, Perrin, or Mat. At least for the time being, there’s no definitive proof that Rand – or any of the other three candidates – is the Dragon Reborn. In the books, Rand al’Thor eventually stood revealed as the Dragon Reborn, but for now, it remains to be seen if Amazon’s Wheel of Time show will go down the same road. The possibility of Lews Therin being reborn as a female adds Egwene (Madeleine Madden) to a mystery that already included Rand (Josha Stradowski), Mat (Barney Harris), and Perrin (Marcus Rutherford). Because of this change, Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) and Lan (Daniel Henney) now have four suspects to monitor instead of three.
The latter was altered by Moiraine’s opening monologue in the Wheel of Time series premiere when she revealed that the Dragon can be reincarnated as a boy or a girl. Wheel of Time is only three episodes into its first season, and quite a few noteworthy changes have already been made to characters like Perrin Aybara and the Dragon Reborn prophecy in the books. For these reasons, there are understandable concerns amongst readers that Wheel of Time may make similar choices. Shows like Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, and more have notoriously made numerous, divisive changes to their original stories by killing off characters early and moving in unexpected directions. How certain book-to-TV adaptations have taken liberties with the source material in the past has some Wheel of Time fans wondering if Amazon’s show will change the true identity of the Dragon Reborn.
